Circular product development for the Resourceful.

We design hardware that uses less, wastes less, and keeps working. Bara is a circular product development studio with offices in Cape Town and London — combining industrial design, production automation, and consultancy for founders and operators building things that matter.

Engineering diagram of Bara's circular product development method — six clockwise stations: brief, design, engineer, make, use, return. The return arc (callout ①) closes the loop back to brief, making the cycle circular.
01 · Ventures

A studio that ships its own work.

Each venture is a vehicle for material, machine, or process research that comes out of the studio.

02 · Services

Four practices, one studio.

We engage on any of them — or all of them, if that’s what the work needs.

a.

Product development

From sketch to manufacturable hardware. Engineering, prototyping, and supply chain held to a circular standard from day one.

  • Hardware engineering for new ventures
  • Manufacturable specs from concept sketches
  • Materials selection and supplier strategy
b.

Industrial design

Form, function, and material reasoning for products that earn their place — in someone’s home, vehicle, or factory floor.

  • Form, ergonomics and CMF systems
  • Production-ready 3D and technical drawings
  • Brand-aligned product families
c.

Production automation

Tooling and assembly systems that scale production without scaling waste — designed alongside the product itself.

  • Custom tooling and assembly lines
  • Container-mounted production rigs
  • Process design with renewable power profiles
d.

Consultancy

Strategic engagements for founders and operators on circular roadmaps, material selection, and operations.

  • Circular roadmaps for hardware businesses
  • Material substitution and end-of-life design
  • Design and engineering team augmentation
03 · Studio

Bara works with founders and operators across Southern Africa — turning resource-constrained briefs into manufacturable, repairable, distinctive products.

We hold engineering, industrial design, and production automation in equal measure — circular doesn’t work if any one of them is an afterthought. The studio runs as both a lab (shipping its own ventures) and a partner (engaging on selected client work).

At Bara we are working in the construction industry through our commitment to sustainability. By transforming agricultural waste into high-performance building materials at our Western Cape facility, we are setting new standards for eco-friendly innovation across Africa.

Working with Bara

Answers before you ask.

Most first-call questions, in one place. If yours isn’t covered, the team is one message away.

Talk to us

  • How do you engage with new partners?
We start with a short scoping conversation — usually 30 minutes — to understand the brief, the timeline and the constraints. From there we propose a fixed-fee discovery sprint or a phased engagement, depending on how settled the problem is.
  • What kinds of projects do you take on?
Hardware that benefits from circular thinking from day one: building materials, manufacturing equipment, consumer products, and machines that turn local waste streams into useful output. We are deliberately selective and take a small number of partner engagements per year.
  • Where do you work?
Studio in Cape Town, production workshop in Malmesbury, partner office in London. We work with founders and operators across Southern Africa and the UK, and have active conversations in India and the broader continent.
  • Can I license Bara Boards, Bloxcity or Grounded for my territory?
Yes. Bara Boards has an active India partnership track and is opening to additional regional partners. Bloxcity and Grounded are still pre-pilot — get on the list early. Each licence pairs the machine, training and ongoing technical support.
  • Who funds your ventures?
Bara is privately held. Each venture pursues a mix of revenue, partnership equity and selected impact-aligned funding. We are not currently raising at the studio level.
  • How quickly can you start?
Discovery sprints typically slot in within 4–6 weeks. Larger engagements depend on the existing pipeline; we will be straight about timing on the first call.
